Full Moon Hike

  • Cope Environmental Center 1730 Airport Road Centerville, IN, 47330 United States (map)

October’s full moon has long been known as the Hunter’s Moon, a time when the bright autumn moon helped illuminate the landscape as people prepared for the coming winter. This month, we’re taking advantage of that moonlight for a special evening adventure at Cope!

Have you ever wondered what goes bump in the night or what creature made that strange call echoing through the woods? On this special Hunter’s Moon edition of our Full Moon Hike, we’ll explore the nighttime forest and learn about the animals that become most active after the sun goes down.

We’ll listen for the calls of owls, discover how bats navigate the darkness, learn about the secretive lives of flying squirrels, and uncover some of the Halloween folklore surrounding the creatures of the night. Along the way, we’ll discover how animals use sound, sight, and other adaptations to survive in the darkness.
